Marc Barrie has made portraying essence of nature the focus and centre of his life since he left school. Whether the subject is an eagle soaring effortlessly over the Rocky Mountains, or a loon gliding peacefully on a cold misty lake, Marc talent and attention to detail make his painting come alive with stirring realism, evoking in the viewer "the sensation of actually being there". His paintings are rich with colour, depth and realism."I am entirely self-taught , and has no formal art education. I learned by my own mistakes, and by being determined to make each painting better than the one before. I also learned by experimenting with various techniques and styles, which ultimately helped me develop and enhance my own. It is an endless education and journey , and each painting always teaches me something new.""My primary medium is acrylic, but occasionally I work in watercolours, oils or pastels too. I am most comfortable with acrylics because it allows me to achieve the degree of realism and the kinds of technical effects I desire. It is the medium that best allows me to convey the image as well as the spirit I see in nature places and the creature that surround us all."
Robert Shoofly Shufelt Artist 1983 Artist Proof ( Item # 18090 )
This is a 20 year old Robert Shoofly Shufelt A/P (artist proof)print. Beautifully framed and under glass with nice matting. "Each in his own words...Each in his own way..."Signed."Using a graphite pencil, the most uncomplicated of mediums, New Mexico artist Robert "Shoofly" Shuflet has created a "scrapbook" of images that forms a lasting tribute to a vanishing way of life. Simply put, he tells the story of the American Cowboy, not in the bold panoramas of sprawling cattle drives nor in the wild frenzy of the rodeo ring, but rather by capturing moments of everyday life. Whether these vignettes portray a cowboy shoeing his horse while his companions supervise by offering well-meaning suggestions to hurry the task along, or the solitary obligation of a lone rider plunging through brushy back country in search of a rogue cow, Shufelt's skilled interplay of sunlight and shadow adds drama to even the most routine activities." Ynez Johnston Garden in the Desert Etching ( Item # 20331 )
THIS SIGNED AND NUMBERED ETCHING WAS STOLEN FROM OUR STORE ON 12-22-05 OR EARLY 12-23-05. IF SOMEONE TRIES TO SELL THIS PRINT TO YOU, PLEASE CONFISCATE IT IMMEDIATELY AND CALL THE POLICE. AFTER THAT CALL US IF YOU WOULD?
Garden in the Desert Color Etching signed and numbered 7 of 25 by the famous California artist Ynez Johnston. Johnston, Ynez (1920- ). Gold frame under glass and matted. Ynez Johnston was born in 1920 in Berkeley, California. She studied drafting, painting and printmaking at the University of California. The display of her paintings and etchings in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1951) was the launch of her career as a successful artist. She has received numerous grants and awards, such as, first place in watercolor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1952 and Fresno Art Museum's Distinguished Artist Award in 1992. Johnston's work is characterized by "jigsaw" shapes reminiscent of primitive designs. Her unique style has been influenced by her travels to Italy, Mexico, India and Nepal. She has also done 3 dimensional pieces in collaboration with her husband, writer John Berry, and with ceramic sculptor Adam Mekler.
Ynez Johnston creates fantasy worlds using her own personal aesthetic language. Her exotic works suggest teeming cities, vast landscapes, gorgeous royal trappings and improbable vehicles. Sailors, lovers, kings and mythological beasts vie for positions in the complex compositions. Colors -- jewel-like colors -- create opulent tapestries that mesmerize; even her black-and-white images have a full range of 'colors'. Ynez Johnston is the subject of a recent monograph by Gerald Nordland and a touring exhibition organized by the Kennedy Museum of American Art.
This piece appraised at $1200. Selling here for $850. CLICK HERE TO VIEW OUR ART GALLERY!
Etching - A printing technique where the lines of the design are drawn onto the metal plate and then bitten (etched or eaten away) by acid.
The best way to describe the etching process is to look and feel a five-dollar bill. Most paper currency is actually an "engraving" because it is hand engraved. The printed lines on the money itself are raised like little hills above the paper surface. The little raised lines come from ink that fills little hand carved "V" shaped valleys in the steel plate on the press at the mint. The carved image transfers to the paper as the plate prints and is re-inked. Currency engravings are the end product of incredible craftsmanship and control of the carving tool point as it is applied to the plate by a master engraver. Engravings, while extremely precise (look at the names of the states on the Lincoln Memorial roof), are limited to a single line technique and the mint is hardly the place for an artist to ex press himself. Etchings, like currency, are prints that also have the raised ink lines produced in roughly the same manner of printing engravings. The difference comes from the way the lines are carved in the plate. Instead of "engraving" a line by hand, the line is scratched, in an infinite variety of ways, through a prepared coating that is resistant to acid. And when the plate is submerged into an acid bath the exposed metal is eaten away into little valleys that hold the ink when the plate is printed. The "etched" plate is more open to express the artist's drawing creatively than a carved engraving plate. Engraved corrections on an etching plate are not uncommon. Some of what the artist gains in creative expression he loses in precision. Etchings for the most part, are printed from soft metal plates, such as zinc and copper, which are more suited to a clean reaction to acid and better-printed quality. These soft metals tend to wear away at the edges of the tiny valleys holding the ink during printing. It is because of this tendency to wear that artists limit printings to one hundred or less etching prints. The smaller the number of prints in an edition the more it is valued by collectors. (But that doesn’t necessarily make the print more valuable.)

Icart Perfect Harmony Vintage Framed Print ( Item # 26698 )
This is an older framed, matted and under glass Louis Icart print entitled "Perfect Harmony". I'm not sure what that title means but I would guess that dogs are getting along very well and/or they are singing to her -- take your choice.
We estimate this print to be about 50 years old, but could be from the 1930's as it was originally painted in 1932. This print is signed (facsmile, I'm sure), in the actual painting rather than in the matting or margine, as were later reproductions.
Nice subtle color and rather clear lines.

Fetherolf Spirit of Summer Limited Edition Lithograph Print ( Item # 20145 )
This is a gorgeous landscape limited edition 78/230 lithograph print by James Fetherolf(American, 1925 – 1994). It was most likely painted in the Santa Ynez Valley in California The photo doesn’t really do this painting justice. In actuality the billowing afternoon clouds over the mountain, and sun on the summer pasture are much more vivid than what the camera has captured. Framed, matted and non-glare glass. Numbered and signed by the artist. Landscape painter James Fetherolf's work is noted for its precise rendering of fine detail, a skill he may have mastered during his years as a background artist for several Hollywood film studios. Fetherolf was born in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, in 1925. He attended Syracuse University; and after graduating in 1949 he moved to California, hoping for an acting career. For five years, while struggling to develop his acting career, Fetherolf worked as a part-time matte artist for Twentieth Century Fox Studios. The difficulty of finding acting jobs eventually convinced him that his future in the arts lay in painting. He then returned to Fox full-time. In 1957, he moved to Walt Disney Productions. Fetherolf claims that his years at Disney were educational in several ways — partly because the standards of perfection were very high, and partly because his work was tied to deadlines. He produced detailed paintings on glass, usually three or four feet in size, of cities or landscape scenes. These "matte shots" were later combined with live action. His work appeared in such classic films as Zorro, Pollyanna, Mary Poppins, and Third Man on the Mountain. After a visit to a local art gallery, during which he decided he could do at least as well as the artists represented, Fetherolf turned to the fine arts. He began by painting seascapes, which were enthusiastically received. These and his landscapes had become so popular by 1969 that he left the film industry and devoted himself to oil painting. The dramatic quality in Fetherolf's paintings is his ability to capture the reaction of light a quality most evident in the work of the great landscape artists of the nineteenth century. His paintings are also distinguished by clarity of detail. For example, individual timbers are discernible inside a distant barn; and cacti on the horizon are individually painted. He is also known for the moist, billowing quality of the clouds in his large skies, as in "Spirit of Summer", a quality he achieves by working on the sky in each painting in one sitting while the paint is wet. Fetherolf has the exceptional ability to bring the viewer into the scene in the paintings he creates. The viewer can feel the warmth of the sun; the coolness of the shadows; the approaching storm; the first spring rain; and the early snow clinging to buildings, trees, and the land. Fetherolf has received seven gold medals from the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art, and was selected to paint the centerpiece work, America! America!, for the Mint's "America the Beautiful" series. His work was also represented in the Bicentennial exhibition of the R. W. Norton Museum in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Robert Bateman Early Spring - Bluebird Limited Edition Print ( Item # 20989 )

"The eastern bluebird is found in most of settled North America east of the Rockies. The population increased after the coming of white man and the clearing of the forests. The bluebird likes open country with scattered trees and woodlots. It is a bird of 'edge conditions', the edge of a field and a forest. When I was a boy, bluebirds were much commoner in our area than they are now. A sighting now is a special event. There are different theories for their scarcity today. One is that clearing of land is more complete with steel rather than wooden fence posts. Another is that starlings and house sparrows, which also nest in holes, have competed for nesting sites, and being more aggressive, have beaten out the bluebirds. There is also the theory that pesticides in modern agriculture have brought down the population. In my mind, I associate bluebirds with early spring and our pioneer forefathers. This is why I thought it suitable to place this bird on a pump handle. In my area, there are still farms that were built over a hundred years ago. In some cases, the house and barn have been torn down or burned down, and the pump is all that is standing as a relic of our past.I have tried to capture one of those soft, damp days of early spring, when the snow patches are retreating and the puddles are advancing." Anheuser Busch Custer's Last Fight Lithograph Framed ( Item # 28021 )
The original of this painting was done in 1880's and soon thereafter the prints. Twenty years later more prints were done to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Anheuser Busch. I'm not sure of the date of this print. If it is older then you are getting a real bargain, but I suspect it is a reproduction done in the 60's or 70's.
This colored and framed print depicting the grizzly battle between General Custer's troops and Indian warriors at Little Big Horn. The frame is oak and with a plexiglas protector. The shadows you see in the first photo are caused by the plexiglas refection and the lithograph has no imperfections and little discoloration.
Custer is featured at center waving a saber and dressed in fringed buckskin. The remaining cavalry officers (except for his brother Tom) are dressed in military uniform. Indians are armed with scalping knives, tomahawks, clubs, spears and rifles. Dead of both parties appear in foreground, with several being identified in the bottom margin.
Custer's medals and banners are in lower left margin. Mounted Indian poses beside a monument in lower right margin. Text below image advertises Anheuser-Busch Brewing Assn.
Cassily Adams (1843 - 1921), artist and Otto Becker (1854 - 1945), lithographer.
Custer's Last Fight
This print is probably the best known visual interpretation of the battle of the Little Big Horn, and, in fact, may be one of the best known images in American art due to the wide distribution of this print. Adams painted his version of Custer's last stand in the 1880s, and it hung in a St. Louis saloon, which was acquired by the Anheuser-Busch brewing company. Anheuser-Busch then produced a lithographic print of the painting and gave prints to their distributors, bars, and other outlets. Through its display, it became widely known to diverse audiences.

Red Skelton Autographed Clown Playing Accordian Lithograph ( Item # 30917 )
Great lithograph print signed by famous comedian Red Skelton which is entitled "Clown with Accordian".
Red exhibited a number of his originals and prints at an art gallery here in Sacramento in the early 1970's, and in fact visited the gallery for a showing, which was well broadcast in the media.
This print has the orignal Red signature as well as the pencil signed lithograph. This lithograph is very well done and almost looks like the original water color or pastel.
We guarantee this to be an authentic signature. Light flashes on glass are a result of some reflection -- print, glass and frame are in excellent condition.

Abraham Lincoln Oil Painting by Mignon Adams ( Item # 26437 )
Magnificent Large Oil Painting of President Abraham Linocoln by artist Mignon Adams, who just recently passed away. This is one of best oils I have ever viewed of President Lincoln -- very vibrant and extremely well done. This painting is much more impressive in size and detail when viewed in person versus the photographs.
Mignon Adams was a Sacramento artist for approximately 20 years. Before that she was member of the Marin Art Society in the Bay Area and before that in the Washington, D.C. area. I understand from the grand daughter that Mignon turned down $2000 for this paintings a few years ago -- from a bank, which my guess would be named, "Lincoln Savings" or something along that line. This painting was prominently displayed in her home prior to her passing.

Big Red Saddlebred Horse Oil on Canvas by Mignon Adams ( Item # 26464 )
Hopefully you have a "Big Red" Saddlebred or Thoroughbred with four white stockings and a white diamond blaze. If so, this is the oil on canvas painting for you.
This is a painting of "Redwood Emperor" (1947-1965), a saddlebred, I believe, ASHR 22664, a grandson of the famous " Bourbon King" ASHR 1788, who I believe was foaled in 1930 and lived til 1930. If I am incorrect please send me the correct information as I'm unfamiliar with the ASHR registration.
In Kentucky, an unusual colt of predominantly trotting blood with a dash of Denmark was foaled in 1900. Bourbon King was sold as a weanling to Allie G. Jones, North Middletown, Kentucky. He was a sensation as a five-gaited show stallion, winning the grand championship at the Louisville Horse show as a three-year-old. Living to the age of 30, Bourbon King was the great progenitor of the Chief Family.

Naive Portrait Oil Painting Children by James Vanderpool ( Item # 26662 )
Very rare Naive Folk Art Oil Painting of Children by James Vanderpool, New York, (1765-1799). Vanderpool gained some fame by doing a portrait of his famous uncle James VanDyke. This painting now resides in the Newark Museum, Newark, NJ.
Here are the comments made by the art appraiser:
The artwork which you have submitted for appraisal is an original oil painting on canvas created by the artist James Vanderpool (1765-1799) United States.
Vanderpool was a self-taught portrait painter who was active in the New York area with regard to his artistic career. The time period for the painting should be the late 18th Century.
The subject matter in the artwork are two charming children, a girl who holds a rose in her hand and a boy who is holding a pet cat. Although Vanderpool did not extensively travel in order find customers who wanted portraits painted of themselves or family members, he could be considered within a group of artists who were itinerant artists or limners, who for the most part were not academically trained artists.
This class of folk artists or naive painters artworks did not always have correct proportions or anatomy, but the paintings almost always contained elements that were decorative and often personal in style. Example: the children and their pet.
During this time period, family likenesses could only be rendered by an artist. The sitters for a portrait were often those who could afford a painting and were usually an important or wealthy individual. After the beginning of the 19th Century, photographic images were available to the public and the artists were not in demand as in previous times. Thank you for your inquiry. Sara Kinch

Pigeon Point Lighthouse California Coast Oil Painting ( Item # 29280 )
A very nice oil painting of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse just north of Santa Cruz on the California coast.
My feeling is that this was a somewhat well known artist in the 1930's, but there is no signature, and the research so far has not turned up a name. It was purchased, along with another oil painting entitled "Forgotten" by the same artist..
The purchaser of this oil paid $25 for this painting in 1934. That would be the equivalent of approximately $500 today, and probably more as that was of course depression time when few had $25 to spend on an oil painting.
The painting is on board and very well done with light streaming from the lighthouse, smoke from a nearby house and a sailing ship off the coast. No smoke damage or other damage to the oil.
Very nice 1920's-30's gold "deco-type" frame.
If by chance you recognize this artist I would be very greatful to know his or her name. Our email address is below.

The second of our oil paintings by the same unknown artist. This is rather winter scene with a "Forgotten Horse" standing in a light snow next to a rail fence. House and barn up on the hill with lights inside and smoke coming from the chimney.
My feeling is that this was a somewhat well known artist in the 1930's, but there is no signature, and the research so far has not turned up a name. It was purchased, along with another oil painting entitled "Pigeon Point Lighthouse" by the same artist..
The purchaser of this oil paid $21.50 for this painting in 1934. That would be the equivalent of approximately $450 today, and probably more as that was of course depression time when few had $21 to spend on an oil painting.
No smoke damage or other damage to the oil, however, I see a few very small black spots and not sure if that is a rub or some black paint.
Very nice 1920's-30's gold "deco-type" frame.

Maxfield Parrish "The Canyon" Image in Glass ( Item # 23385 )
An extremely rare Maxfield Parrish drawing which is imaged in glass with a really nice brass art deco frame.
Again this image is in the glass, not a print encased in the glass. I've had many Maxfield Parrish antique or older prints over the years, in many sizes, and this is the first I have every encountered which is imaged in glass. Two circle hooks at the top of brass frame for easy mounting.
Every Maxfield Parris expert who has viewed this piece says "they have never seen or heard of a piece like this." I believe that the printer of Maxfield Parrish prints in the 1920's in the San Francisco Bay Area was given permission to do a few litho's in glass of this Maxfield Parrish original -- this is the result. If you know more about this piece I would appreciate your input.
Below is Appraiser Rachael Goldman's comments on this Maxfield Parrish image in glass:
The print under glass (wrong it is an image into the glass) has been evaluated based upon several compositions. The piece has been no doubt made by Maxfield Parrish, an American artist who combined the mythical elements of the period with that of the exemplary landscape. The piece is entitled "The Canyon" Parrish, Maxfield American, 1870-1966 Parrish was given the name Frederick at birth in Philadelphia, PA. In 1870, but adopted the name Maxfield later.
Parrish regularly painted from photographs, which he took. He used black and white glass plates to transfer form and light, and added color of his own invention. One of his examples of the photography was the print “Canyon,” consisting of two composites. Using his faithful model Kitty Owne (also the reclining figure in “Daybreak”), he superimposed her figure on a background of trees.
This particular painting was to be used for the Easter 1923 issue of Life Magazine. Upon receiving the original painting back from Life, Parrish made major changes in the background, suing steep walls of a rocky gorge and thus creating the Canyon. The House of Art then reproduced the painting as an art print. Parrish continued working in his unique colors, his dreamy unreality and distinctive elegant style until 1962; his famous, unusual shade of blue became his trademark. A few years later in 1966 he died at the age of 95. His work is still being sought by generations of new collectors. There is a range of values for a print of this type. It is still a reproduction because all of Parrish's works have been typified in this manner.
Note: Sometimes appraisers don't like to admit "they don't know." In this case I firmly believe she had never seen this, or other images in glass by Maxfield Parrish so she winged it. She mentions several compostions like this -- show me one on any web site I say. Of course she couldn't. So I go with this piece as one of a very few and very rare pieces. Your decide. If you are a serious Maxfield Parrish collector you will want to consider this piece.

This print which we believe is from the 1920's has a beautiful Deco frame. The outer edges of the frame have worn and some red undercoating is showing rather than the black. Gold gild on raised corners.

Maxfield Parrish Garden of Allah Antique Print with Frame ( Item # 22574 )
This Maxfield Parrish "Garden of Allah" is straight from the Arbraian Nights. Very old print that is in excellent condition and nicely framed with modified Deco Frame that is also in very good condition.
Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the twentieth century. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known and most beloved artists America had known or would ever know. His unmistakable paintings - characterized by "Parrish blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and perfect-looking young women draped in flowing, classically inspired garments - are infused with a romantic and paradisiacal quality so entrancing that today's reproductions of them elicit the same infectious enthusiasm as when the first prints were released over seventy years ago.

Maxfield Parrish Vintage The Rubaiyat - 1917 ( Item # 29013 )
Fabulous vintage Maxfield Parrish print "The Rubaiyat" with a copyright date of 1917 by C.A. Crane of Cleveland, Ohio, in it's original Art Nouveau frame under glass. Original back paper also, but it's coming loose and will need a new acid free backing.
The colors in this print are vibrant and I don't believe you will find one that has more detail and little or no fading. Obviously well done by a qualified lithographer.
Frame is very Art Nouveau with copper detail in a double framing look. The outer black paint and copper edges could use some touch up. The print itself is in outstanding condition.
Please remember these photo's were taken with the print under glass so you are getting a some shadows and slight glare. Also, the colors are not as vibrant with the camera when taken under glass versus viewing with the naked eye.

Clean Charcoal and Pencil Sketch of a Woman by the famous realism artist Wade Reynolds (1929- ).
Nicely framed, matted and under glass.
Wade Reynolds original oils sell for thousands of dollars.
Appraiser Comments:
"The artwork which you have submitted for appraisal appears to be an original charcoal and white chalk drawing on paper that is hand-signed by the contemporary artist Wade Reynolds (1929-) United States. The artist is noted as a painter and as a designer whose style is for the most part realistic. He has rendered figure and landscape paintings and drawings but is most known for his figure and portrait artwork. The artwork that you possess may have been a preparatory sketch for a more detailed artwork by the artist. This may be the reason for the hand that is drawn on the upper-right portion of the drawing. This is a sort of note to the artist to remember something for a later painting."

ABOUT THE ARTIST
My inspiration is born from the works by Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Kandinsky and others. I am fascinated by the ability of intense color and texture of line to convey an emotional expression from the artist to the viewer. I create images that are recognizable to welcome the viewer into the scene.
By using pure color, freedom of line, and simplicity of shapes, I try to instill in the viewer, feelings of joy and well being which are within us all, but often needs coaxing.
I draw because it makes me feel good and energized, and I want the viewer to experience that same energy that inspires me to create. The use of black paper in my work is a neutral player in my drawings, being the “absence of colour”, and does not interfere with the psychological effect of my colour palette. My use of black outlines around the shapes are deliberate and necessary and intend only to define and intensify the emotion of my work. My imagery is taken from my surroundings but I am not afraid to create images and places from my mind’s eye – places to escape from the real landscape, temporarily.
