Antique Valentine: Civil War Era Valentine Ca. 1866 ( Item # 21150 )
VISIT OUR VALENTINE JEWELRY & GIFT GALLERY AT http://www.tace.com/vendors/rhumba/Valentine.htm A museum-worthy collector's item, this rare Civil War Era Valentine, Ca. 1866 is possibly one-of-a-kind and comes with its original box. This is a three-dimensional valentine with paper accordians beneath the top layer and the second layer with a very fine paper lace and gold embossed top with the most intricate pin-prick piercings and design that looks like a stained glass window. This incredible paper lace is gusseted at each side of the Valentine to render it three-dimensional. The window doors open to reveal a magnificent and detailed representation of a period-attired woman standing at her dressing table that resembles a fine painting on porcelain or ivory. There are three, finely rendered, die-cut roses that resemble paintings on Limoges on three of the corners, and we would suspect that one is missing on the top right corner. There is a brown spot where the aged glue has shown through the paper lace where the paper accordian was attached and has now become detached from the front paper lace. Otherwise, we would call the condition as close to Excellent as a piece of this nature that has survived 138 years might be. It is breathtakingly beautiful and hearkens to a tranquil time of gentility and grace, an era goneby. The Valentine measures approximately 4-5/8 x 3-1/4 and the depth of the side gussets is approximately one inch. Click here to see the side gusset panel. Considering the age, rarity and unusual circumstance of finding the piece with its original box, despite its worn condition, one would be inclined to rate its presence as a bonus nonetheless. The box, itself, a faded beauty, features a die-cut central medallion, applied die cut with angel and trumpet heralding the word "Sincerity" and paper lace decoration. It is in fair condition with signs of age and wear, nearly detached sides. a missing die-cut and fragments of paper lace. The bottom of the box has an applied label with gold lace edging that charmingly states, "A Token of True Love" and two pencil mark datings "1866".Click here to see the mark. The box measures approximately 5 x 3-1/2 x 3/8". For the serious collector, this Civil War Era Valentine dated 1866 is a once-in-a-lifetime find. Due to the fragile nature of this piece, we respectfully request that you ask all questions prior to shipping and consider the purchase a final sale to reduce handling on this very rare and important piece of Civil War Era Valentine ephemera. A museum-worthy collector's item, we are proud to offer this rare, George C. Whitney Co. Valentine in unbelievable Near Mint Condition dating Ca. 1881. This is a three-dimensional valentine with paper accordians beneath two layers of very unusual paper lace. The bottom layer of paper lace is a unique and early bi-colored paper lace with Wedgwood blue and white Greek Key designed plates incorporated into the design at each corner. There are German diecuts of flowers and foliage flanking each side. The central window features a rectangular portion of paper lace with the top raised from beneath by a paper accordion and a finely rendered diecut bust of a lovely young woman applied to the top. The Valentine is signed on the reverse with a red "W" and 1-1/2. This mark is for the George C. Whitney Co., an acquisition of the company originally found by Esther Allen Howland. Esther Allen Howland, a direct descendent of John Howland, one of the original pilgrims who sailed to this country on the Mayflower in 1620, is credited with being the first American Valentine entrepreneur, manufacturing Valentines from a home business with the help of her family using imported papers and lace. She is said to have been responsible for extending the custom of exchanging Valentine greetings to the United States in her area of Worcester, Mass. where she founded and operated her successful home-based venture. In 1881, she sold out to George C. Whitney. Click here to see the mark on the reverse of the Valentine for the George C. Whitney Co. Victorian Valentine: Antique Valentine Cherub Lute Unsigned ( Item # 43698 )
Victorian Valentine features two layers connected by their original paper accordians to make this beautiful and nostalgic piece of sentiment three dimensional.  The delicate paper lace surrounds a central cherub with blond curls tumbling around its head playing a lute within a teardrop shaped opening.  At the top of the paper lace is a die cut of a lovely young girl in a bonnet, raspberry blouse and a pale blue print pinafore with brown bangs and curls with a very detailed, charming face.  At the bottom of the lace is a heart shaped die cut inscribed, "To My Valentine" in gold lettering.  This unusual antique Valentine opens from the left to the right.  We checked the print on the inside and found that it is perfectly seated for the Valentine to open in the reverse manner with the seam of the card on the right.  The inside verse, in sepia print reads, "True Love/Long as there is a sun/to rise,/Roses still will have their glory;/While there are forget-me-nots,/They will have their place in story./In my heart a fairer flower/Holds for aye a greater power."  The verse is surrounded by foliage and fancy scrollwork.  The card is in Very Good condition with a slight bend at the bottom left petal on the purple/lavender flower, and some darkened glue and a stray pencil mark on the reverse.  Otherwise, this lovely, unsigned Victorian Valentine is in remarkable condition for its age.  A nostalgic reminder of simpler and more gentle times, this antique Victorian Valentine will make a remarkably thoughtful gift for someone special to have and hold for another 100 years or so!  (#43698-VictorianValentineCherubLute){msg1}{msg21}
